Once upon a time, I was in the Army and got stationed in Germany.
My second Christmas over there, I went to the local open air Christmas market. I bought some lebkuchen (Christmas cookie) to send home (and a box for me). Well, I got back to the barracks with my purchase and opened my box of lebkuchen. Ummm, errr...I loved them so much that I ended up eating more than my share and had to go out and buy more for my family back home. These lebkuchen were delicious. Sort of a cross between a gingerbread and a fruitcake. They taste like Christmas.
Over the years, I have tried various recipes trying to recapture that magic. This year, I tried this recipe:

I have just taken the first batch from the oven and tasted it. Yummmm...this is one of the better lebkuchen recipes.
